Downloader for X pertany a el que s’anomena Gestor de descarreges, un tipus d’aplicació que s’utilitza per a baixar fitxers d’Internet a través dels protocols ftp i http. Downloader for X es per tant semblant a altres programes tipus GetRight, Net Vampire, Download Accelerator Plus, etc …. però per a sistemes unix/linux, i amb les seues propies caracteristiques, on destaca la recuperació de la descarrega tant per al ftp com per al http, és el que s’anomena resume download, i el poder baixar a la volta un fitxer dividint-lo en varis trossos més xicotets:

Els programes d’este estil, estàn molt be i son ideals per a un determinat tipus d’usuaris, pero hi haura molta gent que preferixca utilizar altres ferramentes més al estil unix, com el potent wget, poden incluir-lo en els seus propis scripts.
